A MAKESHIFT Marlborough XV made light work of Beaconsfield at the weekend to move up to fifth in South West One (East).
The Common side made five enforced changes from their win over Buckingham at home a week earlier.
Veteran players Ben Saqaniavene and Bill Navesu were called upon while there was also a first team call up for Jasper Leadbeater from the second team.
Second row Henry Webster was also drafted into the team after returning from injury while Viliame Naivalu started on the bench.
Marlborough started the game quickest and were quickly seven points to the good following an outstanding break by Ovini Tuitoga. Fly-half Daniel Jones went on to touchdown before later converting his own try.
Marlborough showed signs of dominance with an excellent set-piece, but in open play Beaconsfield were a threat.
Because of this, the hosts equalised. Ovini Tuitoga restored parity when touching down in the 22nd minute before Jones registered a brilliant individual try to confirm his brace.
A scoring spree in the five minutes leading up to half time changed the game, though.
Marlborough skipper James Farrell touched down from the base a scrum, with Jones adding the extras, to make it 7-26.
But a converted try plus a penalty more than halved the hosts’ deficit as the half ended 17-26 in Marlborough’s favour.
Beaconsfield started the second half as they ended the first, and were soon within two points of a flagging Marlborough.
But the hosts’ third try was their last score of the match.
Clinical Marlborough went on to dominate the game with Tuitoga registering a second try on 55 minutes.
Viliame Naivalu ran in a try from the restart to extend the visitors’ lead to 12 points before Tuitoga completed his hat-trick moments later.
Jones’ conversion proved to be the game’s final points.
This weekend, Marlborough host Chippenham.
Both teams currently boast 57 points from 19 games.
