CADLEY-based Alex Renwick was rewarded for his hard work when landing the prestigious Renny Cup at the Queen’s Club in west London.
The St John’s School pupil was seeded number four in the competition and beat players from St Paul’s, Harrow, Charterhouse, Marlborough College and Cheltenham College on his way to Rackets glory – a sport that has been traditionally played at 14 private schools across the UK.
Rackets is best described as a sport with ties to squash – although the ball, which can travel up to 200mph, is much harder and the court is almost three times the size.
Renwick, who is also a National League hockey player with Bath Buccaneers, plays locally at Marlborough College and had several contemporaries cheering him on courtside in the capital.
The teenager’s love for the sport largely blossoms from his father Rob’s interest in the sport. Rob won the Renny Cup in 1976 – nine years before he became one of the founding members of the Marlborough Rackets Evening club.
The proud father said: “I am extremely proud of Alex and what he has achieved. This is a testament to his hard work, dedication and ability. The pupils at the College regard him as one of their own.”
Chris Davies, secretary of the Tennis & Rackets Association based at the Queen’s club, added: “It is particularly pleasing as we try and develop the game and we are very grateful to Marlborough College for encouraging external talent into the game.”
