YET again, the weather decimated fixtures in the Trowbridge Windows and Conservatories-sponsored Trowbridge & District League at the weekend, with only one match surviving the sodden conditions.
That came in Division One as Freshford United signed off for 2019 with a 2-0 victory at home to Warminster United, with the league now taking a brief hiatus before returning on January 4 next year.
Frankie Elliott fired Freshford into a 1- 0 lead in the first half thanks to an assist from Nicholas Taylor. After the break, Elliott turned provider as he set up Taylor to double the home side's advantage.
Freshford had to fight to hold onto their advantage in the closing stages and had goalkeeper Chris Birleson to thank as he saved a penalty to ensure his team ground out just a second league win of the season.
A further four matches were scheduled in Division One and four more in Division Two, but no play was possible at any of them because of the wet weather.
With players now taking a welcome break over the Christmas period, an exciting second half of the season beckons in 2020.
In Division One, leaders Marshfield will be hoping their good form continues as they look to lift the title in their first year in the top flight.
However, Devizes Town Reserves, Heytesbury and Warminster United will all be hot on their heels and looking to pounce on any slip-ups.
At the bottom, Melksham Town A, Warminster Town Reserves and Calne Town Reserves will be hoping for better fortunes in their bid to avoid the drop.
An exciting race for the title and promotion looks certain in Division Two, with Staverton United three points clear of KEW PR at the top but the latter having a game in hand.
The chasing pack are led by Dilton Marsh Wanderers and Calne Eagles, while Barford Harnets are at the bottom.
A&B Cup
ALTHOUGH no action took place, Warminster Town Reserves progressed to the third round of the AM Print & Copy-sponsored A&B Cup over the weekend after receiving a home walkover against Seend United.
