TROWBRIDGE picked up their third win of the South West One East campaign on Saturday after thrashing Wimborne 35-10 at home.

The victory was the most convincing of the season for the Doric Park side after previous wins by 13 and six-point margins.

The result leaves Trowbridge third from bottom in the table, five points clear Windsor immediately below them.

Elsewhere, Chippenham turned in a strong performance away at Oxford Harlequins but ultimately came up short as they were beaten 36-27 on the road.

Leaders Royal Wootton Bassett stretched their superb unbeaten start to an 11th game last weekend following a dominant 34-6 victory at home to Beaconsfield.

Bassett immediately put their Buckinghamshire rivals under the cosh. A number of attacks were held up by determined defence but it was clear that the home side would eventually score.

The 10th minute saw a sustained attack on the Beaconsfield line in the far corner and Phil Bardwell – back from a long-term injury – bludgeoned his way over the tryline for Bassett to lead 5-0.

Midway through the half, skipper Gavin Ougan set off on a mazy run from his own half and an outrageous dummy bamboozled the Beaconsfield defence. Although he was held up just short of the line, an offload to Joshua McCafferty allowed him to crash over to extend the lead. Connor Tomley slotted the conversion.

Bassett continued to press and extended their lead in the 30th minute when Bardwell went over again after a short-range lineout.

Beaconsfield then had their best spell of the match but, in truth, never looked like breaking through the stubborn home defence.

Just before the interval, they opted to kick a penalty through the posts to leave the half-time score at 17-3.

Beaconsfield started the second half in determined mood and were rewarded with another penalty after a Bassett hand in the ruck was spotted by the referee.

However, Bassett’s strength at the set-piece and superior fitness began to take its toll on the visitors, who began to tire.

Midway through the half, Jefeti Vakalalabure outpaced the Beaconsfield defence to secure the bonus-point try, with Tomley adding the conversion.

Beaconsfield were in real trouble now and were hanging on with desperate last-gasp defence.

Bassett continued to camp on the tryline and it was no surprise when Sam Davies and skipper Ougan crossed for Bassett to take their touchdown tally to six before the final whistle.

Marlborough had no game last weekend but are the only Wiltshire side in action this Saturday as they travel to Old Patesians, with the rest of the division taking a break.
