RATHER than putting her feet up for Mother’s Day on Sunday, Westbury mum-of-four Fiona Price will be pushing herself to the limit at the World Masters Athletics Championships Half Mara-thon in Hungary.

Price, who celebrated her 46th birthday on Wednesday, will be donning a Great Britain kit for the first time as she competes in the 45-50 age group over by running 13.1 miles in Budapest.

The Avon Valley Runners athlete, who clocked up a new personal best time of 1:26:58 as she won the female vet 45 category at this month’s Bath Half Marathon, only discovered her passion for running in 2007 after competing in the Cotswold Triathlon to raise money for charity Headway.

Now training under coach Martin Rush and running six times a week, Price, a run director at the Southwick Country parkrun with husband Sean, can hardly believe that she’s about to take on the world.

“A few years ago, a friend’s daughter, who lives in Wales, was left in a coma after a moped accident, so about 35 of us got together and had the idea of doing a triathlon,” said Price, who runs a catering business.

“Five years ago, I laughed about barely being able to run half a mile and I remember that it took me two weeks to complete my first mile.

“But I ended up running all around Westbury, joining Westbury Running Group and eventually Avon Valley.

“I grew up in Bradford on Avon so I love having the chance to go all around there.

“I never expected to be going to another country to race and get a Great Britain kit as well.

“If I finish the race out there, I’ll be allowed to wear it at competitions in the UK.

“Because I’ve got four kids (Benjamin, 24, Grant, 22, Sheridan, 19, and Cameron, 15), it’s quite apt that I’m going to be running on Mothering Sunday. I’ve got 22 people who are coming out there to watch me.

“I’ve been spending time doing my research into the other ladies that are going to be racing and I can’t wait for it.”

Price, the Avon Valley club’s honorary secretary, flew to Hungary today and is also due to compete in the London Marathon, on April 13.

Avon Valley’s beginners sessions start on April 9 at Trowbridge RFC 7pm (6.45pm meet).
