ON A day of shocks in the Chantry Digital-sponsored Knockout Cup, second division Bradford United Reserves can stake a claim to the biggest upset from the seven second-round ties.
Ross Hatter’s team, who just a fortnight ago picked up their first win of the season, conjured up a magical performance to send first division Lamb FC crashing out.
The Bradfordians tore the formbook up thanks to the narrowest of 1-0 victories, Luke Simpson’s 70th minute thunderbolt booking Bradford spot in the last eight.
Holt 5 Semington Magpies 1
THIRD Division high flyers Holt FC sprang a major surprise by dumping out in-form first division Semington Magpies who despite taking an early lead, suffered a 5-1 loss.
Chris Berrelly headed home a Matt Russell free kick to give Magpies their lead after that Ricky King’s side fell apart as Holt restored parity through Jamie Parlour and then took a half time lead courtesy of Matt Woodhead.
The second half saw Holt run away with the tie as a second from Woodhead made it 3-1 before Fynn McCarthy-Driver effectively killed the game with a fourth for Holt, whose win was completed by Jamie Parlour who bagged his second of the afternoon and fifth for the winners.
Marshfield FC 3 Castle Combe 5
A STORMING second-half performance from first division Castle Combe saw them avoid elimination at the hands of third division Marshfield.
Paul Sanderson’s side, who just a few weeks were victims of a cup upset when they were beaten in the A&B Cup by Lacock, were 3-1 down at half time and looked to heading for more disappointment before a second-half fightback.
Andy Jefferies gave Marshfield the lead on 12 minutes and the host doubled their advantage when Russell Lodge netted in the 25th minute. Combe reduced the arrears through Jamal Chevolleau but Marshfield reclaimed a two-goal lead on 44 minutes when James Williams fired in for 3-1.
After the break, Combe were the much better side and started their revival thanks to a first of the season from Ryan Salter.
A second of the afternoon for Chevolleau squared things up at three apiece. Ryan Peck completed the Combe comeback when he put them in front and when Chevolleau bagged his third of the game the incredible turnaround was complete.
Trowbridge Wanderers Reserves 0 Westbury United Reserves 5
FIRST Division Westbury United Reserves avoided a potential banana skin at second division Trowbridge Wanderers Reserves who, despite producing a plucky performance, were beaten 5-0 as Westbury enjoyed a comfortable progression into the next round.
Phil Hampson claimed both of Westbury’s first-half goals although his first went in off the unfortunate Will Browning.
Marc Lanfear increased Westbury’s lead before Hampson struck a third of the afternoon to make it 4-0. Goal number five came from the penalty spot with Lanfear scoring from 12 yards after Kye Leather was penalised for an alleged push in the area.
Wanderers were reduced to 10 men in the final minute when they had Adam Cooksey sent off.
United FC 7 Bradford United 4 (AET)
TROWBRIDGE side United FC, who are enjoying one of their best ever starts to a season, sprung a major surprise by dumping out first division Bradford United, who lost out in an 11-goal thriller.
Bradford were given the lead by Phil Little which was cancelled out by Mateusz Pitowoski before half time.
After the interval the game really game to life as United went 2-1 up, Jakub Koman scoring. Things got better for United as they opened up a 3-1 lead, Allen Shavon finding the net.
United were then pegged back as goals from Phil Little and Dan Sandford tied things at three-each.
Bradford then gave United a reality check as they reclaimed the lead thanks to a hat-trick goal for Phil Little.
United regained their composure as the hunted a fourth goal and thanks to a second of the contest from Allen Shavon they fashioned an equaliser and took the game to extra time.
Added time went the way of United who got their noses in front via a first-ever goal for Daniel Wosik.
Shavon made it 6-4 with his third of the game and United sealed the cup success when Lukasz Bareja finished things off with a good goal.
White Horse FC 2 Freshford United 2 (AET, Westwood win 5-4 on penalties)
ONE OF the ties of the round was the one at Leighton Sports Centre Westbury where third division White Horse took on Freshford United.
First division Freshford, after leading twice in normal and extra time, lost out 5-4 in a thrilling penalty shootout that needed 14 spot kicks before a winner was found.
With neither side able to break the deadlock in the first half it was Freshford who made the breakthrough in the second period with Nick Ross putting them ahead.
White Horse kept plugging away as they look for an equaliser and it was Paul Beavers who provided the goal that took the tie to extra time where Freshford regained the lead courtesy of Mark Gerrish.
Back came White Horse a thanks to a second from Paul Beavers the game went to the dreaded penalty shoot-out.
Gerrish, Ross, Ricky Trott and Tom Rooney all scored for Freshford with Steve Roddy, Russell Whatley and Ryan Mortimer missing their efforts.
Dave Appleyard and Matt Mead failed to hit the net for White Horse but successful kicks from Allan Clarke, Nick Mead, Dan Cox, Pete Ayton and Paul Beavers, who struck the wining penalty, booked the winners their place in the next round.
Worton & Cheverell 5 Bratton 1
THE all-second division clash at the Lye in Seend saw Worton & Cheverell progress to the quarter-finals stages at the expense of stablemates Bratton.
Had it not been for the brilliance of stand-in keeper Scott Storey, Worton’s winning margin could have been a lot greater.
A patched up Bratton side held out for 30 minutes but finally succumbed in the 31st minute with Ashley Rake scoring to give Worton the lead which they doubled on 45 minutes, Jake Flower scoring to make it 2-0.
Worton had to wait until the 61st minute to add their third, Jake Flower claiming his second not long after Dave Jones had hit the bar for Bratton.
Martin Dickinson made it 4-0 on 78 minutes and Ashley Rake who had started the scoring for Worton scored the fifth two minutes from time.
Mark Durbin scored a very late consolation for a Bratton who despite missing a few players never gave up and kept going right up to the final minute.
