WARMINSTER Town chairman Pete Russell has revealed he knows who he wants to appoint as his club’s new manager.
Warminster parted company with boss John Phillips four weeks ago, with chairman Russell taking charge of the team as caretaker boss.
The Weymouth Street chief says the club haven’t advertised the vacant position and are hoping to secure the signature of their number one candidate in the not too distant future.
“We’ve got someone in mind that we’d like to take over and we’re trying to get them in. I’m not going to say who it is but hopefully we can have it sorted in the next two weeks or so,” said Russell.
“We’ve had two or three people ring up to show an interest but we haven’t advertised and I told them that if we do, I’d be happy to talk to them.”
On the pitch, Warminster brought a run of nine games without a win to a welcome end as they picked up three points against bottom-of-the-table Keynsham Town.
Louis Sparey capitalised on a mistake from the Keynsham keeper to lob the hosts in front before Steve Seals made it 2-0 from the spot.
The visitors pulled a goal back from the spot themselves to set up a tense finish, but Warminster held on to claim a vital victory.
Russell added: “They came to get something out of the game and they worked really hard. The last 15 minutes or so were pretty nervy but we got the points.
“The referee’s assessor said that their penalty was a stonewall one and our boys thought the opposite but the man in black makes the decisions.”
Jake Herd and Shaun Sheppard are suspended for tomorrow’s trip to Chard Town.
Paul Shanley hailed Bradford Town’s display in last weekend’s victory over Chard Town as ‘exceptional’.
Unbeaten Bradford marched on at the top of the Toolstation League First Division as star striker Sam Jordan netted twice in the opening 30 minutes.
Jordan completed his hat-trick early in the second period before Chard’s Leigh Bailey pulled a goal back, with Bradford notching up a 10th straight league victory.
“The first 30 minutes was as good as we’ve played all season – it was an exceptional team performance,” said Shanley.
“We could have scored even more but it looked like a dangerous game going in to it. Chard have had a poor start but they’d got a few good players back and had been picking up results.
“It’s still early days and we’ve got to be wary because everyone wants to be the first side to beat Bradford Town.”
Winger Liam Milburn is Shanley’s only absentee for tomorrow’s trip to mid-table county rivals Devizes Town.
Bradford have added to their squad by signing goalkeeper Lewis Porter from Westbury United.
Westbury United boss Matt Bown was proud of his understrength side’s display against Wellington, despite the visitors coming away from Somerset with nothing.
Nathan Hallett finished off a fine team move to pull the score back to 2-1 but a spirited second-half fightback was curtailed as Wellington netted from a controversial penalty.
“We had five big guns missing and an inexperienced back four but we did ever so well,” said Bown.
“We dominated the second half but that penalty killed us. Their striker just held the ball up in the box but the referee blew up, saying Matty Friendship was holding.”
Westbury have snapped up striker Adam James.
Melksham Town boss Darren Perrin thought that his side should have had three penalties against Hengrove Athletic in the Toolstation League Premier Division last weekend.
Defenders Dave Thompson and Matt Cooper found the net in the second period but Perrin was left frustrated as Dan Kovacs was impeded three times in the penalty area in the first half, with the referee failing to point to the spot on each occasion.
“I know that it’s a tough job and I’m probably one of the worst culprits for criticising referees but we had three blatant penalties turned down,” said Perrin.
“The referee has booked Dan Kovacs for simulation in the third incident. Anyone that knows Dan Kovacs knows that he’s not the kind of player that dives and he was through on goal so there was no reason for him to go down.
“We did score an equaliser late on to rescue a point but I was a little disappointed with our second half performance because I thought we defended sloppily and there were a few individual mistakes.
“But credit to the boys for showing a bit of character to come back into the game and get a draw.”
Melksham host Sherborne Town tomorrow and Bristol Manor Farm on Monday night.
Ralph McCaldon has returned as Trowbridge Town chairman.
After two weeks of consultation, McCaldon returns to the head of the Trowbridge committee to replace Dave Smith, who stepped down from the role in September due to personal reasons.
Meanwhile, Mike Alford’s Bees slipped to only their second defeat of the season last weekend as they were beaten 2-0 by title rivals Southbrook.
Ant Packer and Devan Bryan found the net at Woodmarsh for the Swindon-based outfit, whose victory saw them go top of the table.
Fourth-placed Trowbridge host FC Chippenham Youth, who currently lie 12th, tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Corsham Town Reserves notched up their third victory in four matches as they won 2-1 at Wroughton.
Corsham, who are ninth in the table, go looking to stretch their unbeaten run to five games when they host 10th-placed Marlborough Town tomorrow.
In Divison One, Melksham Town Reserves maintained their six-point lead at the top of the pile with victory over Malmesbury Victoria Reserves.
Melksham, who have failed to pick up maximum points in just one of their leageu fixtures so far this term, ran out 3-1 winners at the Conigre.
Tomorrow, Melksham will be aiming to maintain their fine form at bottom-of-the-table Blunsdon, who were thrashed 10-0 by Intel last weekend.
