FOR their first run-out of the season, England will be pretty happy with their 20-13 win over Australia in their opening QBE International at Twickenham last Saturday.
It’s not often a northern hemisphere side is down at half time against a southern hemipshere one and come back to win the game, so that has got to be a positive for Stuart Lancaster’s men going into their next two games against Argentina and New Zealand.
It’s great for confidence and really, in the first match, it is all about winning and they did that.
It’s very important that England win these games – at least two out of the three this autumn is what was generally felt from the outset – and it’s not really about the style of them at all.
That said, there are a few points of concern.
Everything is building towards the World Cup, from which we are only 22 months out.
With a tour of New Zealand to come at the end of this season for England that will really sort out the men from the boys.
But what worries me is that, with probably 20 or less fixtures between now and the World Cup, England truly haven’t got a consistent centre combination that works and is a real threat.
It’s a real issue – and so are the wing positions.
Marland Yarde did well on his debut against the Wallabies, albeit with limited chances, but I’m still not convinced by Chris Ashton, especially as England go for long spells without the ball.
The pack is there and the spine of the team is more or less in place.
But if Owen Farrell is going to play at fly-half, he plays too deep, asking a lot of our centres to break the gainline.
The 9, 10, 12, 13 area of the field for England has to be a real concern as we build up to 2015 and it’s something that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later if they are to succeed.
