WHITE Horse FC’s first ever venture into the Wilts Sunday Cup is set to continue, as they eventually booked their place in the last 16 courtesy of a workmanlike 7-4 victory against Warminster’s FC St George.
With the game reversed due to a waterlogged Leighton Sports Centre, the Chippenham League side made the perfect start with Craig Hatton-Pocklington getting on the end of a Tom Crawford through ball and finishing neatly in just the first minute.
Seemingly in control of the early exchanges, the Horse proceeded to let their opponents back into the game just four minutes later, in what was to become a frustrating first half habit, Mike Payne getting on the end of a hopeful ball forward before finishing well past Rich Hunt.
Stung back into action, the Westbury side reasserted their dominance and soon found themselves back in front, Dale Rowland blocking goalkeeper Eric Da Silva’s clearance and then finishing well under pressure.
However, it was route one again for the Frome League side just two minutes later, and again their tactics proved equally as effective as Mark Wallis finished with aplomb to make it 2-2.
Again White Horse rediscovered top gear and on the half hour mark Marek Miszta re-established a lead, getting his head on a Crawford cross following a well-worked corner.
Although not immediate on this occasion, FC St George weren’t to be shaken off in the first half as Paul Arnold levelled things up for the third time in the morning, poking home after another defence splitting through ball had ripped White Horse apart.
With words of reasoning instilled at half time the Horse came out more purposeful and finally opened up a two goal cushion, Hatton-Pocklington bagging his second and Crawford prodding home from close range in the first ten minutes of the second period.
Still the hosts came back however, and it was game on again with 20 minutes left, as Arnold netted for his own brace, connecting with yet another hopeful ball forward.
The travelling side finally put the game to bed in the last ten minutes though, with Rowland netting twice to make it eight in three games and back-to-back hat-tricks for last season’s top scorer. At 7-4 the visitors finally shut up shop, reshuffling the back line in order to avoid any last minute scares.
AFC Amesbury Athletic 6 The Castle FC 2
CASTLE FC’s trip to Salisbury first division leaders AFC Amesbury Athletic, who had netted 45 goals in their previous games, ended in disappointment after they were beaten 6-2 by a side who many people believe could go on and lift the trophy this term.
Gary Campbell and Jack Bramwell were on target for the Castle.
AFC Gas v AFC Melksham - home walkover
AFC MELKSHAM, who reached the semi-finals of the Sunday Cup last term, saw their cup dreams end before they had even started.
Mike Rogers' side, who have been struggling this season, were unable to raise a team for their trip to top Swindon League side AFC Gas giving them a walkover into the third round.
Biddestone Social v Trowbridge Rangers (Sunday) - home walkover
CUP holders Biddestone Social received a walkover into the next round after fellow Sunday side Trowbridge Rangers (Sunday) withdrew from the league.
So the defence of the trophy that they won last April when they beat New Century WMC 4-2 will start in December.
Fortune Inn 2 Nationwide Pavilion 0
FORTUNE Inn were unable to match their exploits of the previous round that saw them beat AC Swindon.
Home advantage against Swindon League division four table toppers Nationwide Pavilion counted for nothing as the visitors to Stanley Park claimed a 2-0 win.
Wanborough FC 3 Corsham Centre Youth 4
MANY of the Corsham Centre Youth players have tasted Sunday Cup success before with Corsham Centre, but if they are to relive their former cup glories they will have to up their game in the next round after just getting over the line at Swindon League Division Two side Wanborough who they beat 4-3.
Centre were two down inside 30 minutes but managed to claw a goal back before half time, Mark Sharratt heading in a Simon Gray cross.
The introduction of Adam Shipman at the start of the second half had the desired effect for the Centre, who turned the game on its head to lead 4-2.
Simon Gray tapped in to restore parity and a Gray header on 80 minutes saw them take the lead and a thunderbolt from Ben Thomson five minutes from time made it 4-2.
There was still time for Wanborough to set up a nervy final few minutes for the Centre as the scored a late penalty to make a fight of things but the visitors held out to seal a far from convincing 4-3 win.
West Tytherley 4 FC Buscots 8
FC BUSCOTS proved too strong for Salisbury League Division One side West Tytherley who despite scoring four goals themselves, suffered an 8-4 reverse.
The teams shared six goals in an action packed first 45 minutes that saw Adam Bewley scored twice and Craig Townsend once for the Buscots.
After the break the teams scored another six goals between them but it was Buscots who progressed to the next round thanks to a further three goals from Bewley that took his tally for the game to five another well-taken effort from Townsend and Angus Webster’s single.
Worton & Cheverell (Sunday) 1 The Windmill (Sunday) 7
WORTON & Cheverell (Sunday) who had an impressive 4-2 win over Swindon League side Rudis FC in the previous round were given a footballing lesson by the The Windmill (Sunday), also from the Swindon League who beat them 7-1.
A hard-pressed Worton side came under immense pressure from the start but they held their own for 20 minutes before Windmill who netted 14 in the previous round took the lead following a defensive error.
Undaunted, Worton continued to play football against a stronger technical team who were 3-0 up at the break. James Cullip ran onto a through ball from Kyle Davies to score Worton’s consolation.
