IT MAY not have been the most eye-catching fixture of the day, but the Division Two relegation battle between basement side GRFC and AFC Avellinos produced a 13-goal thriller that Tam Laidlaw’s side won 7-6 to earn their first win in of the season.
A first for the club from Robbie Burton since his recent move from Oakhill put GRFC ahead. Ben Butterfield drew Avellinos level only for GRFC to retake the lead thanks to a second from Burton.
Simon McCarthy squared things up for Avellinos before Scott Nash and Burton with his third of the game put GRFC 4-2 ahead.
Back came Avellinos and thanks to a second from Butterfield cut the gap to the odd goal before half time.
The goal fest continued in the second half and GRFC must have thought they had killed off their hosts when Robbie Burton netted his fourth and Harry Myles his first to give their team a 6-3 advantage.
But back came Avellinos and narrowed the gap to the odd goal, McCarthy claiming his second of the game and Butterfield his third to make it 5-6.
Just when Avellinos had a sniff of getting back into the game they conceded a seventh which came from the boot of deadly Burton who claimed his fifth of the morning to make up his team's seven.
There was still time for Avellinos to pull another goal back but a fourth for Butterfield was to count for nothing as GRFC held out for a nail-biting win.
Southwick Wanderers 3 Miller Sports A 3
WITH Division Two leaders FC Buscots in Sunday Cup action, second in the table Miller Sports A were unable to get the victory they were after from their trip to Southwick Wanderers.
Instead Mike Stevens men had to settle for a point from their stalemate with Matt Rusling’s men as they came from 1-0 and 3-1 down to claim a 3-3 draw.
Southwick went 1-0 on two minutes when Jack Parker latched onto an Elliott Hinton free kick to fire the hosts ahead.
Miller fought back and parity was restored by Richard Moules but a battling Southwick side regained the lead thanks to a second from Parker who found the net after being set up by debutant Zack Manna.
The same pairing combined for Southwick’s third and again it was Parker who found the net to complete his hat-trick.
Miller Sports gave themselves a lifeline late in the first half, Nick Groves firing home to narrow the hosts lead to the odd goal.
After the break Southwick were on the back foot for much of the second half and Miller got a deserved equaliser when Joe Murray scored direct from a corner to earn his side a point from a game that they probably would have thought for all their second half possession they should have won.
