I EXPECTED Bath’s front five to be on the front foot last Friday and that exactly what happened – Gloucester’s front five were pummelled.
I don’t think that Gloucester could have had any qualms if they lose by two or three scores and the game finished something like 25-3 but that just didn’t happen.
I think that Bath will really be wondering how they let them come away with a point. We really shouldn’t have let the lad (Freddie Burns) have the time to get his try when we should really have dropped off and played for territory a bit.
Winning the game is the first objective but with the way the game went, the supporters shouldn’t really have been made to feel as jittery as they were.
As we say in rugby, sometimes you get hold of the throat and you don’t let go and it’s hard to imagine a side like Leicester being as dominant in the game and not winning by a large margin.
Bath are still a young group and it’s too early to say if they’re missing that ruthlessness, but I do feel that with the strength they’ve got in their squad, they’ve got to be looking to get five points at Worcester (tonight).
This is the time of year where Worcester are hoping that other sides have been weakened by the internationals but Bath have pretty much a fully-fit squad to choose from, so they should be well-equipped to take the points.
The other teams who want to be in that top four will go there and get five points, so Bath have to do the same.
I’m very happy with the current England set-up saying ‘look, the development phases is over and now it’s time to produce’.
The England side has some real leaders out there now with the likes of Owen Farrell, Mike Brown and Toby Flood and I really think that two wins out of three has to be par for the course from the internationals.
