WESTBURY United youngster Nathan Hallett-Young is having a crack at the big time after earning a spot at the regional trials for Samsung’s Win a Pro Contract competition.

The 17-year-old defender, who is in the middle of a Futsal and Education Scholarship at Bristol Rovers and is captain of Westbury’s U18s, is one of 360 hopefuls vying for a professional contract at Swindon Town, Leyton Orient or Wycombe Wanderers.

Hallett-Young, from Trowbridge, will attempt to impress the Win a Pro Contract coaches at the Goals Soccer Centre in Bristol on Sunday, October 27.

“I saw (the competition) on Facebook and I thought I’ve got nothing to lose,” said Hallett-Young, who has also featured for Westbury’s first team in the Toolstation League First Division.

“To be honest I didn’t think much was going to come from it, and I’m quite surprised that I’ve come out in top 360.

“This is the biggest opportunity I’ve had so far. I have the chance to become a pro and it’s more than any opportunity I’ve ever had before. I’m hoping I can go all the way.”

Former Corsham Town man George Nash reached the final three of the first national competition and spent a week training with Swindon in 2011.

Meanwhile, Westbury teenager Jake Andrews is also hoping that he’s on the way to becoming a full-time footballer after being offered a scholarship by Bristol City.

Midfielder Andrews, who turned 16 on Monday, joined the Robins’ academy from Warminster Highbury Youth as a nine-year-old.

The youngster, who has represented Wiltshire at u16 and u18 level, is also hoping to make a splash on the international front after taking part in a regional trial for the England U18 schoolboys team at Newbury Town FC last night.
