TWO of the first division's fiercest rivals met at Combe Lane where hosts Goatacre CC locked horns with Staverton for a second time this season, just a month after Staverton beat the cricketers’ 3-2 at Atworth.

In what was another intensely contested game honours were shared as the teams fought out a 2-2 draw.

After a goalless first half it was Staverton who broke the deadlock when Jason Povey gave them the lead.

Goatacre, who were well below par, didn’t look like troubling the scoreboard that was until Chris Chapman was upended in the area and Darren Holcombe tucked away the penalty.

Staverton thought they had won it when Cameron Henley regained the lead for Aaron Latchem’s side but it wasn’t to be as Goatacre struck late on.

With time running out Goatacre were awarded another spot kick, this one being somewhat fortunate after Alex Hamilton took a tumble in the area. Once again Holcombe held his nerve as he stroked the ball home to make it two each.

White Horse (Sunday) A 10 North Star A 1

WHITE Horse (Sunday) A finally chalked up their first win on the board with a 10-1 demolition of North Star A at Leighton Recreation Ground.

Both teams came in to the encounter with weakened line ups, and the initial exchanges were cautious.

In fact, North Star seemed to settle quicker putting pressure on a historically-leaky White Horse defence.

It took only five minutes to unlock their rearguard when Matty Law latched on to a through ball to finish in fine style.

The White Horse response was immediate when Dale Rowland craftily flicked on to Tom Crawford who finished superbly.

At this point the game was still in the balance. White Horse keeper, Rich Hunt was forced in to a good save and he was helped by his woodwork a few minutes as they kept the visitors at bay.

But any doubt over who was to end up top by the end of the game was effectively ended with a fine 10 minute hat-trick from Rowland midway through the half allowing the Horse to go into the break with a comfortable 4-1 lead.

The second half started much like the first with North Star staring the livelier. The fifth goal, however, was the final nail in the coffin for North Star morale, Tom Crawford the beneficiary of a long defensive clearance.

With White Horse dominating across the midfield it seemed apt that veteran midfielders Rob Green and Darren Clarkson were able to add their names to the scoresheet, both with strong headers.

Crawford added two more to take his tally to 4, and a composed finish from substitute Matt Crosnier rounded off a depressing day for the Star. White Horse, however, will be looking to build on their great result.
