CHIPPENHAM & DISTRICT SUNDAY LEAGUE WG PARR TROPHY: No upset for Kings Arms as Castle march on

After being labelled as cup favourites, all the pressure was on Tom Perkins' side and they didn't disappoint with a 4-2 victory sending them into the last eight.

It wasn't as comfortable as some may have expected as The Castle were made to work for their victory.

Both sides fielded strong sides and it was as expected from the start with The Castle comfortable and dominant in possession and Kings Arms content to sit back and be difficult to break down.

Castle managed to break the deadlock on the 10th minute when a superb crossfield ball from Dan Sloan found Jack Hopper in acres of space out wide and his pinpoint cross found Adam Heath at the back post and the striker made no mistake in slotting the ball home for 1-0.

Adam Heath bagged his second of the morning five minutes later when after a mix-up in the Kings Arms defence enabled him to lob the keeper from around 30 yards with a looping shot.

At this point it looked as though the game could of turned into a rout but all credit to Kings Arms as they continued to battle and they were rewarded when on 25 minutes a punt upfield found Simon Drewitt and his soft shot somehow eluded Matthew Tilley in the Castle goal and gave the visitors a lifeline at 2-1.

Five minutes later Kings Arms could have found themselves level, somewhat against the run of play when they were awarded a penalty and Tilley redeemed himself when he got down well to save from Simon Drewitt.

Castle knew they had to step it up a level and that's what they did when 10 minutes into the second period Liam Hill cut inside and let fly with a rasping drive that flew into the bottom corner to make it 3-1.

On the hour mark Castle looked like they had secured the win when good work from Dan Sloan on the left hand side saw him go past 2 players before letting fly with a shot that ended up in the top corner for 4-1 Castle.

Kings Arms continued to battle and work hard and they gave themselves hope when Simon Drewitt got his second of the morning on the 75 minute mark to make it 4-2.

The game petered out and ended with the final score at 4-2 to The Castle however they were certainly made to work hard for their victory over a spirited a Kings Arms side who never gave up and put on a good showing in a local derby that was contested in a good spirit.

Chippenham West End 5 Southwick Wanderers 3

SECOND Division Southwick Wanderers came unstuck at first division Chippenham West End.

Matt Rusling’s side went into the tie top of their respective division but they were unable to transfer their recent good league form into their cup clash as the West End claimed their spot in the last eight thanks to a 5-3 win.

Southwick went in front when Jack Parker’s cross was deflected in off Mike Murden. Murden atoned for his error when he equalised from a free kick.

Southwick regained the led thanks to another own goal when Carl Davies header deflected in off the unfortunate Jamie Corp. West End dragged themselves level for a second time, Ben Hibberd scoring from the spot to make it 2-2.

Southwick went ahead for a third time, Jack Parker tapping in a Craig Sheppard cross but for a third time West End restored parity through Steve Coleman and thanks to a stunning long-range strike from Ben Hibberd. Elliot Corp scored a tap in to complete the scoring and hand the West End their 5-3 win.

North Star B 3 Worton & Cheverell (Sunday) 1

THIRD Division stablemates North Star B and Worton & Cheverell (Sunday) met for the first time at any level with a 3-1 win for the former giving them their passage into the last eight on a wet and cold morning at Beversbrook.

A disciplined first-half showing from both teams saw North Star going in at the break one-up courtesy of a Jack Taylor thunderbolt.

A stronger second half showing from Worton saw them finally overcome a staunch defence when Kyle Davies pounced on a goal keeping error to see parity restored.

North Star regained the lead through Kosta Petrov but Worton had the chance to level when Kyle Davies got brought down in the area.

Unfortunately for Worton, stand-in keeper Mike McKeller did well to drop to his left hand side and save Declan Blandford’s spot kick.

With five minutes a decisive attack from the Star led to Jack Taylor following up a Dan Payne shot to earn his team their 3-1 win and their place in the quarter finals.

Oakhill FC 2 Somerford FC 8

THERE was something of a mismatch at Kington Langley where first division Somerford turned up the heat in the second half to run out 8-2 victors over fourth division Oakhill.

Jordan Tarrant who scored both of the Oakhill goals put his team into a surprise lead, but their joy was short lived as Ashley Monaghan’s double gave Somerford a 2-1 half-time lead.

After the break Somerford ground down their hosts as they found the sights for goal, Chris Yeo scored a second-half hat-trick, Monaghan added to his first-half double to claim a three timer. Own goals from Jermaine Brown and Kelvin Stewart made up Somerford’s tally.

Pig & Whistle United v Trowbridge Rangers (Sunday) - walkover to Pig & Whistle

THIRD Division Pig & Whistle United had the easiest of passages to the next round.

Richard Allen’s side were given a walkover after Trowbridge Rangers (Sunday) withdrew from the League due to the continuing lack of changing rooms at their Stallards base.

Prestige Bodyworks 6 Corsham CC Wildcats 4 (AET)

AS EXPECTED, the pick of the first round matches was the one between first division sides Prestige Bodyworks and Corsham CC Wildcats.

Prestige, who had already beaten the Wildcats twice this season, completed a hat-trick of victories over Scott Fleming’s side who played their part in a thriller before losing out as Prestige claimed a 6-4 extra time win.

A goal either side of half time from Zac Klukowski put Prestige two up things could have been even better for the home team had Dave Nolan not had a penalty saved by keeper Joe King.

A sublime individual effort from Scott Fleming got Wildcats back in the tie and it was game on when Dan King drilled home a free kick to make it 2-2.

Adam Mitchell’s goal gave Wildcats the lead which they held for a while but with 12 minutes remaining Adam O’Keeffe scored for Prestige to take the game to extra time.

Goals from Martin Riddell and a second from O’Keefe just three minutes into added time put Prestige 5-3 up and when O’Keeffe completed his hat-trick it was as good as game over for the Wildcats who, despite scoring as fourth via Dan King, saw their cup dreams ended in round one.

Sportzcoach Dragonz United 3 Melksham Cosmos 1

SPORTZCOACH Dragonz United may have given up home advantage at Stanley Park to play their game with Melksham Cosmos at the Conigre, but it was Dragonz, who had already disposed of competition favourites Staverton in the preliminary round, that progressed to the quarter-finals thanks to a 3-1 win.

Goals from James Stone and Sean Heathcote put Dragonz 2-0 up before Alex Shaftoe got Cosmos back in the tie with a goal before half time. After the break Dan Moore sealed the win for Dragonz with their third of the morning.

Sutton Benger 2 Christian Malford 2

SUTTON  Benger followed up their preliminary round romp over Crossblades with a much harder game against local Christian Malford.

It was Benger who came out on top in a cup classic that was decided after a thrilling penalty shootout after two hours of football had ended with the teams locked at 2-2.

Benger took an early lead when Mark Merriman curled in a free kick to make it 1-0. Malford pegged them back with a fine volley from Dave Brown who fired home form 18 yards.

Benger were back in front just before the break when Tom Merriman found himself in space to head home and continue his unbelievable scoring run from centre back.

Malford pressed more in the second half and created more chances. They got the equaliser when Ben Munns' free kick zipped off the wet surface to beat Benger keeper Colin Hayward and make it 2-2.

Benger defended well and took the game to extra time. In cold wet conditions neither team could get a winner.

The game went to penalties and Benger keeper Hayward was the hero saving penalties from Scott Evans and Alex Wolverton.

Mark Merriman, Chris Miles, James Weston all netted for Benger before Luke Todd planted home the winner to send Benger through 4-1 on penalties.
