CORSHAM captain Robin D’Souza is backing his side to stave off the threat of relegation from Premier One.

Corsham slipped into the top-flight drop zone last week and missed out on the chance to move out of the bottom two as they tied at eighth-placed Ashcott & Shapwick last weekend.

But D’Souza reckons his side have what it takes to secure their place in the top tier of the West of England Premier League, with the final six games of the season looming.

“I’m not worried at all because I know that we can do it with the talent we’ve got,” said the Corsham skipper.

“We’ve been playing well in the last few weeks but we just haven’t had that bit of luck that you need to pick up results.

“We’re just waiting for that one win at the moment – that’s all we need to get going.

“I would have taken a tie last weekend after it looked like they were on their way to winning quite easily. They needed 17 for the last two wickets and we had to dig in and bowl a tight spell.

“Then they needed seven off the last over, and anything could have happened, but we kept them down and got a result.

“We’d batted really well before that, and felt like we could have won it on a crumbling wicket, but they were at home and they knew exactly what the track would be like.”

Corsham opted to bat first after winning the toss, with D’Souza hitting 48 off 37 balls as he opened the batting alongside Toby Davies (15).

The visitors’ first four wickets fell for 83 runs but Ashur Morrison added some impetus to the Corsham innings with a knock of 64.

Steve Bullen chipped in with 32 but D’Souza’s men were put under constant pressure by Ashcott’s James Hayman, who claimed six wickets.

Steve Coppell also took two as Corsham were eventually skittled for 236 midway through their final over.

Will Sobczak spearheaded the home side’s run chase with a hefty knock of 93 whilst fellow opener Daniel Cooper was also in the runs as he made 47.

Meanwhile, Corsham’s Tom Foley was in-form with the ball taking four wickets for just 35 runs.

Ashcott’s Coppell made 19 but he fell in the final over to D’Souza, who ended with figures of 3-51, as the hosts failed to take the win, ending on 236-9.

Corsham face a daunting home clash with leaders Bath, who thrashed D’Souza’s men by eight wickets last month, this weekend.
