THINGS don’t get any easier for us this weekend, with another tough game down in Devon.
I can’t remember a time when we went to Exmouth and got a win – and we’re heading down with quite an inexperienced side this time.
Some players are unavailable but, having lost four one-dayers and now three three-dayers, perhaps a bit of complacency was creeping in and it was time to look at some different, younger, faces.
Neil Clark (Potterne) has been unlucky for us this season really.
He’s an attacking middle-order batsman and he scored 120 against Shropshire earlier in the season, but we’ve had our skipper Joe Breet in that spot because we needed him to captain the side.
I told Neil he would get his chance and, with Michael Coles not available, that chance is now.
He’s probably more of a one-day batsman and I know he’s been frustrated, but now it’s an opportunity to show what he can do in a three-day game.
Jake Roberts (Potterne) probably hadn’t been bowling as well as last year and there were a couple of question marks there, but he’s looking back to that form now and he’ll be opening the bowling for us in Exmouth.
As for Toby Davies, he’s played well for Corsham and he looks a strong batter so he’s got another chance too.
If you look at the games we’ve played, we’ve taken all but one of the bonus points available but, while things have been going okay in the first innings, they certainly haven’t in the second.
It’s difficult to put a finger on why that is but we had an opportunity to get over the line in our last game against Cornwall at Corsham and we threw it away.
That probably knocked us a little bit confidence-wise but we’ve just got to get back to it and turn it around now.
It’s been a tough season for us, but we’ve played some good cricket at times and hopefully we will have something break for us.
