WE know we haven’t been a million miles away from picking up a result this season, but losing the game against Cornwall when we looked to be on our way to winning was really frustrating.
We wanted to win the toss and bat first on the first day because we thought the wicket would turn but that didn’t happen. Tahir Afridi still bowled extremely well and we restricted them.
We were level with Cornwall with just two wickets down at the end of the first day before going on to make 360-odd.
That wasn’t a bad score but I did think that we could have really stamped our authority there and got closer to the 400-run mark.
We bowled well for the first half of their second innings but started making a few mistakes and dropping a few catches.
However, 201 runs shouldn’t be a difficult score to chase down at Corsham but we threw it away somehow.
We’ve taken all of the possible bonus points that were available, apart from one batting point.
That shows that we have been doing a lot of things right and it makes it even more frustrating because if we’d got the win, we might have been just another result away from being in with a shout in the competition.
With the weather looking like it’s going to stay the way it has been, the wickets will stay dry, meaning that it’s going to be even harder to get a result in games.
We’re going to have to go back to the drawing board. We’re at the halfway point of the season and we’ve got a tough trip down to Cornwall in two weeks’ time.
The Ashes started this week and I’m really looking forward to seeing what’s going to happen.
I’m a big fan of the longer form of the game and the Ashes is the ultimate Test series.
Everybody seems to be writing Australia off but you can never do that in an Ashes series.
They’ll be up for it and will want to bring the urn back with them, but I do still think that we’ll end up having too much quality for them.
