WINSLEY are breathing a sigh of relief after finally bringing their gruelling winless streak at the Downs, stretching back 20 months, to an end.

Charlie Holton’s side went the whole of last season without picking up a home win and their last triumph at the Downs came as they won the Wiltshire Division title by beating Calne on September 2011.

But a thumping 147-run victory over Nationwide House last weekend saw Winsley get the monkey off their back.

“It was a real tonic for us because it had been a really long time since we’d won at home,” said vice-captain Kevin Hendy.

“We’ve always been confident of winning games away but it was hard turning up at home, knowing how long it had been since we’d come out on top.

“Not having won a game at what’s the best ground in the WEPL for well over a year is a disgrace really but we’re glad that we’ve finally done it – it was a really good performance last weekend.”

Winsley batted first after winning the toss, with skipper Holton leading the way as he hit 72.

Brendan Nasser (68) and Giles Williams (68*) also quickly found their range, with the home side posting a competitive 288-8.

Nationwide’s Dominic O’Neill got his side’s highest score with a knock of 37 as Winsley also proved effective with the ball.

Ben Strange (3-27), Simon Orchard (3-37), Wayne Griffiths (2-29) and Nasser (2-39) did the damage as the visitors were skittled for 141 in the 37th over.

Winsley host local rivals Trowbridge tomorrow, who lost at home to Devizes last weekend.

Tom Weaver’s side bowled out the visitors for 203 but Devizes’ Tim Saye tore through the Trowbridge batting line up, taking 5-26.

Opener Alex Hart hit 50 while Scott Mitchell added 23 but Weaver’s men fell short as they were all out for 180 in their final over.
