WILTS SENIOR CUP

PAUL Shanley will be hoping to keep his head above water tomorrow when Trowbridge meet old rivals Warminster in the Wilts Senior Cup.

The Woodmarsh boss cancelled Thursday's training in favour of a club swimming session at Clarendon College.

And while his players were making waves in the pool, Shanley was making notes on how to avoid that sinking feeling at Weymouth Street.

He said: "Sometimes you just need to do something different to give the players a break.

"Instead of pounding the astro turf at the John of Gaunt School like we do every Thursday I decided to hit the pool.

"It's a bit of fun for everyone, although I don't go in the water. In fact I stand well clear of the edge - some of these players can't be trusted."

The Bees may need more than armbands to stay afloat against hosts Warminster, who climbed to fifth in the Wessex League table on Saturday with a 4-2 win over Petersfield.

Tom Welch netted twice against Petersfield and Shanley has targeted the lively left winger as one to watch.

He said: "I know all about Tom from his performances for the youth team there.

"Warminster have lots of good players and I expect this will be a tough battle."

Warminster boss Peter Russell says Welch will not be fazed by the big occasion.

"It won't worry Tom one little bit," he said.

"Trowbridge have got some exciting players that we need to watch out for - none more so than Dave Percival.

"We're at home but Trowbridge have such a good following I don't think that will make any real difference.

"I just hope we see a good game and some good football played."

Former Warminster stopper Eddie Quelch is missing for Trowbridge, while Louis Sparey and Tom Malcolm are both doubts for the hosts.
