GOLF: CUMBERWELL Park pro Steve Surry has made it through to the final stage of the European Tour Qualifying School.
Rounds of 70, 69, 71, 70 saw Surry finish in second place with a total of eight under par, at the Sherry Golf Club, in southern Spain.
With 19 players from the 80 starters going through, Surry was always in the mix, being in 16th place after the first round and moving up through the field to claim the £1,000 prize money for second place on the final day.
Surry had a flight booked home for Sunday evening, but will now remain in Spain to compete in the final stage at The San Roque Club. Play commences on Thursday, with the cut being made after four rounds. Successful players will progress through to the final two rounds on November 13 and 14.
This is Surry's first attempt at gaining his Tour Card, and he says he is very pleased to have made it through to the final stage.
Competition will be tough as players who failed to retain their Tour Card last season now enter the fray. The field will also include Philip Walton, who sank the winning putt in the 1995 Ryder Cup match.
Whatever the outcome at San Roque, the fact that Surry has progressed to the final stage of qualifying school will ensure that he gets some starts on the Challenge Tour next season.
