Charity worker turned prospective politician Rebecca Rennison has said her age and lack of political experience will not stand in the way of her being a successful MP.

Miss Rennison, 28, who is standing for Labour in the South West Wiltshire seat, moved around continually in the UK and Germany as a child, as her father was in the RAF.

Her parents settled in Edington, near Westbury, and she now works for a national disability charity in London, which she has taken leave from while she is campaigning.

Miss Rennison, who joined the Labour party 10 years ago when she was still at school, believes more young people need to be represented in Parliament and championing youth issues is one of her passions.

“One thing I think is important when we talk about a parliament representing everyone is having both young and older MPs,” she said. “I think it’s important we have MPs who have taken GCSEs and not O-levels, have student debt, and have tried to get on the housing ladder.

“People say not enough young people are interested in politics, but there are some great young candidates who want to be given the chance. People may say I don’t have the experience, but perhaps it’s just that I have different experience.”

She believes the main issues facing people in South West Wiltshire include access to public transport and services.

“There is a real need for significant improvements to public transport,” she said. “Just from campaigning I have found the expense of trains across the county is astonishing. Car parking is also a huge issue in Westbury and Warminster and I think each town’s circumstances need to be looked at and traders consulted.

“The quality of road servicing is also a major issue. Our roads have been torn apart by the bad weather this winter. Some of our roads are not safe and there needs to be money allocated for this.”

Other issues she feels strongly about are the state of the postal service, highlighted by the temporary closure of a central service in Westbury last year, as well as the threat of closure hanging over Westbury swimming pool.
