THE headteacher of a school put into special measures after an inspection report branded it as failing to provide adequate education' has handed in her resignation.

A letter sent to parents of children at Holbrook Primary School in Trowbridge this week informed them Christine Wilmott is to leave the school.

One parent of a nine-year-old, who asked not to be named, said: "The letter said she had done a cracking job over the years but not a lot of parents would agree with that.

"There are some absolutely wonderful teachers there but without effective leadership it seems that counts for nothing."

A statement from Wiltshire County Council said: "The local authority is saddened by this Miss Wilmott's resignation and wants to acknowledge the enormous amount of work done and the considerable progress the school has made since its Ofsted inspection."

At that time Miss Wilmott said the building blocks for improvement were already in place and extra help from the local authority would help speed up the process of change.

This week the governors of Holbrook issued a statement, saying: "The governing body were surprised and saddened to hear of her departure. Chris has always been completely committed to the school and with her team of teachers has made excellent progress in bringing the school out of special measures. We shall miss her greatly."

Miss Wilmott, who has been at the school for five years, will leave at Christmas. A temporary head will take charge of the school until a permanent appointment is made in September. The schools' Year 6 SAT results from last summer placed Holbrook in the top 40 per cent in Wiltshire for adding value to pupils' learning.
