A SOLDIER was assaulted in the street in the early hours of Sunday morning after a night out in Warminster.
A member of the security team at the John Barleycorn pub spotted a man who had blood pouring out of his head in the High Street at about 2.45am He gave first aid, and police arrived and discovered the man was a soldier who had been the victim of an unprovoked attack in George Street.
The police identified a suspect, who became violent but was overpowered when the security man and a member of the local Regimental Provost Staff stepped in to help.
Pc Simon Margetts praised the two men, saying: "To have two responsible members of the public prepared to jump in and help us just when we needed it most was very refreshing and most appreciated."
A 32-year-old man from Warminster was arrested and taken to Melksham. He has been released on police bail until November 15.
