FIFA international match official Kevin Pike was among the spectators who watched Warminster Highbury Youth's 4-2 win over Westbury Youth A in the first round of the under 14s league cup.

Pike, who was at the game as a guest of Highbury Youth, was an assistant referee at the 2001 FA Cup final between Liverpool and Arsenal and in the last few weeks he has officiated at the Brazil v Argentina international, the Champions League game between Inter Milan and Bayern Munich and the Euro 2008 qualifier between Portugal and Azerbaijan.

On Saturday he was assistant referee in the Premiership match between Aston Villa and Spurs.

Although being involved at the highest level Pike is still keen to get involved in grass roots football and has agreed to referee a match for Highbury during the coming weeks.

He is also keen to encourage youngsters to take up refereeing and afterwards took time to chat with up and coming referee Chris Arnold who took charge of the cup game.

Pike said: "Everyone played the game in a great spirit today and it was also very respectfully observed by the managers, supporters and families. I could see that without doubt Chris has got what it takes to advance his refereeing career to a high standard.

"He is only 19 and referees on the national list have to retire at 48 so potentially he has many years ahead of him to reap the rewards of this early start to his career. It's entirely possible he could make it and I wish him every success."

Afterwards Kevin posed for a picture with Highbury manager Jim Dufosee's man-of-the-match Alex Briant, who performed well in the centre of midfield and was then switched to an unfamiliar role at centre back for the second half but applied himself fully to his task without complaint and acquitted himself well.

Highbury had made the short journey to neighbours Westbury knowing it could be a close game, with the hosts boasting an unbeaten record. Highbury dominated the first half and took the lead after some simple effective pass-and-move football down the left between Ali Rose and Nathan Salmons led to the ball being crossed to the far post where Jamie Samways slotted in from close range.

Midway through the half Adam Briant increased the lead. The left winger neatly controlled a high cross from the right before outstripping the defence and surging into the penalty area before delivering a cool finish past the goalkeeper.

It was the busy Salmons who made it 3-0 when he won the ball from a home defender and went on to unleash an unstoppable shot at the near post.

Westbury fought their way back into the game and DJ Wheeler scored a spectacular long range shot to send the teams in to half-time with the score at 1-3.

The second half was a different affair to the first, with Westbury fighting back and doing well to create several good goalscoring opportunities.

Highbury goalkeeper Tom Dalby was in superb form, making a memorable contribution to the game including a shot somehow tipped over the bar and a fantastic double save, bravely hurling himself at a striker's feet to smother another goal attempt.

Slightly against the run of play Highbury scored again through Jack Findlay.

Overlapping from midfield Findlay was intelligently fed the ball by Ali Rose and made no mistake as his shot hit the back of the net.

Westbury were not finished and Wheeler before delivered another memorable strike from distance to make the final score 2-4.

Highbury will now visit Castle Combe Colts in the second round.
