Trowbridge GP Dr Steve Rowlands has been elected chairman of Wiltshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), the new doctor-led organisation that will be responsible for buying local health services in Wiltshire.

The CCG will come into force in April 2013 when NHS Wiltshire is abolished but it will work alongside the primary care trust this year.

Dr Rowlands, a senior partner at the Bradford Road Surgery in Trowbridge, used to be on West Wiltshire Primary Care Trust and is medical director of NHS Wiltshire, a role he will continue. He will act as interim chairman of the CCG until it is fully launched.

He said: "The agenda for the next 11 months is extremely demanding and I am very keen to support the transition from PCT to clinical commissioning as smoothly as possible.

"I’m honoured to have been chosen as chairman of the Wiltshire CCG, which brings together all GPs in the county to help steer the provision and development of local health services for Wiltshire people. This is an exciting opportunity to build on the good work of NHS Wiltshire."
