VISITORS to Lackham Country Park got all fruity at the weekend when they took part in the annual apple day.

On Sunday more than 300 people enjoyed displays of apples of all shapes, sizes and varieties and were able to sample apple produce and juices.

Wood turners made wooden apples and there were also activities for children, along with tractor and trailer rides around the park and trips on the miniature passenger railway.

Sunday was the country park's sixth annual apple day and organisers were delighted with the turnout.

Andrew Davies, the curator at Lackham's Museum of Agriculture and Rural Life and apple day organiser, said: "It was a very good day with lovely autumnal weather and we had about 60 or 70 different types of apples on display.

"There has been a real resurgence of interest in apples as more people have their own orchards, so many brought their own apples along to be identified and pressed for juice.

"It was really nice to see so many people and they all seemed to be enjoying themselves."

Recipe books as well as tasty treats such as honey and cakes were also on offer.

The day was rounded off with a harvest service of thanksgiving, where the congregation sat on straw bales instead of pews, led by the Rev Sally Wheeler, vicar of Lacock.

An auction of produce held at the end of the day raised money for Christian Aid.
