IN 2005 I was one of eight million people who took part in the Make Poverty History campaign.

I was also one of the 250,000 people who formed a huge white band around Edinburgh. The campaign achieved massive public support and helped put poverty at the top of the global agenda. The G8 pledged $50 billion more aid, debt cancellation for many of the poorest countries, and access to affordable treatment by 2010 for people with HIV/AIDS.

A start has been made: eg Tanzania has dropped all primary school fees due to debt cancellation, but I am very concerned that much of what was promised has yet to be delivered. Rich countries are still denying trade justice to poor countries. October is a global month of action to highlight the slow progress made by the G8.

There is to be a 24-hour global world record attempt of people to Stand Up Against Poverty from from 11am on Sunday to 11am on Monday. Locally, people will be unfurling a huge white band as they Stand Up Against Poverty from 3-4pm this Sunday in Westbury Gardens, Bradford on Avon. All your readers who would like to see a fairer world are invited to participate in this special event and help the white band unfurl totally surrounding the Gardens.

Global White Band Day 4 will be on Tuesday. I urge your readers to wear a white band throughout the day to show they care, homemade if necessary.
