THE latest proposal to turn a west Wiltshire car park into affordable housing is to go before planners.

West Wiltshire District Council has applied for planning permission to transform the Broad Street car park in Trowbridge into 35 apartments.

The three/four storey development will include 22 two-bed and 13 one-bed flats.

The car park has 62 car parking bays and two coach bays and the planning application allows for the retention of 16 car spaces and two coach bays at the east end of the site, and also 36 car spaces in the Upper Broad Street section.

Access into the development would be through Broad Street.

The application is part of a scheme to gain government Private Finance Initiative funding.

Under scheme, to bring 400 new affordable homes to the area, the district council had to put forward enough land for half of those to qualify for funding.

A development of 300 new homes, 150 of those affordable housing, at Southview Farm, Trowbridge, has been given the go-ahead, leading to hopes other sites, such as the car park in Westbury Leigh and the Union Street car park in Melksham, may not be needed.
