Without hesitation, Red or White in Trowbridge for its wide choice of wines and whiskeys and excellent food and service. A unique dining experience.

Who would be your ideal dinner partner and why?

Dr Caroline Jackson because of her wide knowledge in European politics. I would find her views and frank discussions extremely thought-provoking.

Which local landmark or attraction would you recommend?

There is such a wide choice but I would recommend a leisurely walk through the village of Castle Combe or over the Marlborough Downs.

What is your favourite book and why?

Mikhail Gorbachev's Towards A Better World. Not only was he a brilliant politician but a good negotiator, seeking peace in the world.

What is your favourite music and why?

Classical music, especially opera. Although I am not a musician I am surrounded by a family of singers, instrum- entalists and dancers.

How do you relax?

I enjoy relaxing with a glass of red wine and following the world news in the papers.

What keeps you awake at night?

Solving problems on difficult projects. Being a perfectionist can make life difficult at times.

If you were stranded on a desert island what three things would you take?

My wife, a radio and some practical tools as I would probably end up building a holiday village!
