A Warminster woman who volunteers at Erlestoke Prison has received a national award recognising her support for vulnerable families.
Sophie Stanley was awarded the Marsh Trust Award for Outstanding Achievement from children’s charity Barnardo’s after being nominated for her work at the prison’s visitor centre.
Mrs Stanley, 50, supports children who have a parent in prison, welcoming families and acting as a mentor to inmates.
The former travel agent, from East Knoyle, said: “Barnardo’s is a charity close to my heart. I have always supported it by donating a small amount each month and selling raffle tickets, so when considering voluntary work it seemed the obvious choice.
“Erlestoke Prison was suggested and I felt this would be extremely interesting, and I could make use of a recent diploma course in counselling to help the inmates.
“I get huge satisfaction from seeing children rush towards their father, uncle, grandfather or whoever it may be, with a big smile on their face.”
Research has shown that prisoners who enjoy positive contact with partners and children are much less likely to reoffend when released.
Barnardo’s has worked at HMP Erlestoke since 2007, and has managed the visitor centre since it opened in 2009.
Last year they welcomed more than 1,500 children and young people.
Mrs Stanley has been volunteering at the visitor centre for the past two years and does not even claim any expenses, despite the long journeys.
Chris Fegan, a Barnardo’s volunteer co-ordinator who nominated her for the award, said: “Sometimes the parents don’t know where to look for support or they’re too embarrassed to ask for help.
“But Sophie always welcomes them with warmth and affection, putting them at ease and helping children to maintain contact with their father throughout the sentence.
“It can seem to be an intimidating environment but Sophie can be relied upon to support and nurture families through this challenging time.
“Sophie’s support is absolutely invaluable and goes above and beyond what might normally be expected of any volunteer.”
