I was intrigued while reading Andrew Murrison’s column in last week’s edition at the convoluted manner in which this man – once a confirmed Eurosceptic – sought to justify his voting against the referendum motion in Parliament.

So it took a personal meeting with David Cameron to provide “a credible explanation of the Government’s position” to galvanise the vacillating Mr Murrison and allow himself to become Coalition lobby fodder. No mention of the large percentage of his electors who would like him to start representing their views by voting for the motion.

Being largely suspicious of MPs in general, I began to wonder what carrot was dangled before Mr Murrison to ensure his support. I didn’t have to ponder for too long. Over the weekend it was announced that David Cameron’s personal representative on the Great War 100th Anniversary Commemoration Commi-ttee would be one Andrew Murrison MP.

I sincerely hope he enjoys the new role but, given the fact that the Ministry of Defence would prefer to commemorate the end of the First World War rather than the beginning, I fear he will be a very busy boy!
