A man who crashed his car driving along the Semington to Melksham bypass at 4pm today was believed to have fallen asleep a wheel.
He was driving a Rover 75 towards Melksham when the car drove right over the roundabout near the Melksham Divisional Police Headquarters, causing severe damage to the car’s rear bumper and an oil leak, the vehicle then plummeted into on-coming traffic.
The car narrowly avoided hitting on-coming vehicles and stopped near a pedestrain crossing on the other side of the roundabout.
Police and highways maintenance officers were quickly on the scene to partially close the road.
The roundabout has been now been closed while the oil on the road is being removed.
