As secretary of Chippenham & District Talking Newspapers, I would like to correct the impression given last week in your article that there are concerns the talking newspapers we provide each week to local people with visual impairments or any other forms of reading difficulties “could halt” due to reduced numbers of listeners. This is completely incorrect. At no time has our charity considered winding up our free service which is still highly appreciated by over 100 people in the north Wiltshire area.

There has been a reduction in listeners due to the rapid and obtainable improvements in the treatment of sight related problems and also the lower number of referrals received due to cutbacks in the number of professionals now assisting the blind. However all of our volunteers are committed to carry on producing our talking newspapers.

We read and record every Thursday an audio version of the news reports and articles for the north Wiltshire area contained in local newspapers so that those who do not have the ability to read the printed word can still discover and know what is happening in their community.

Most of our listeners receive their audio version of the news the next morning. Our service is completely free to the user as is the supply of listening equipment when required. We can also put your relations and friends in other parts of the county or UK in touch with the talking newspaper which serves their particular area if they might also benefit from receiving one. All that is needed is a call to our charity on 01249 653712, when we will continue to respond immediately.

Alan Scotford, Secretary, Chippenham & District Talking Newspapers Chippenham.
