In reply to Mary Yeandel’s letter Where have all the squirrels gone?, I found it amazing that she says Southwick Country Park is ‘now bereft of nature’. Perhaps she should walk round with her eyes open.
As a regular walker in the Country Park I see different wildlife all the time. There are three roe deer that I see on a regular basis, two active badger setts, barn owls, buzzards, sparrow hawks and this year I had the pleasure of seeing four fledgling tawny owls. There was a litter of fox cubs born in the park that I watched for many evenings and as for the occasional rabbit dropping, there are more rabbits this year than I have ever seen.
While I have not noticed a reduction of the squirrels, I have noticed that there are not as many songbirds and this I believe is due to the squirrels predating on the eggs and young.
MR Sargeant, Trowbridge.
