A service to commemorate 90 years of the Royal British Legion was led by school children from Trowbridge. More than 450 Year 7 and Year 8 pupils from St Augustine’s Catholic College were joined by representatives of the Legion and Wiltshire dignitaries including the Lord Lieutenant John Bush and Wiltshire Council leader Jane Scott. Children re-enacted letters from the First and Second World Wars, while the whole of Year 7 led the commemorations by singing. Jennifer Polledri, vice-president of the Trowbridge Legion branch, said: “I found the service to be both moving and uplifting. Moving because of the nature of the event itself, with its special content and significance to the nation, and uplifting because of the superb contribution made by the pupils. “The bringing together of these two organisations was a very unique experience and, as a school governor, I felt this occasion played a significant role in the development of the students.” Cadets marched into the school’s sports hall as part of the service. Callum Tinnion, from Year 13, said: “I thought that the service was inspirational and very moving. The performances of the younger students really portrayed the emotions that would have been felt at the time. “It is great to be a part of such an important occasion.” Rebecca Bracey, of Year Nine, said: “I was delighted to see so many veterans who really helped us to get into the feeling of remembrance ahead of November.” Niall Maidment, also of Year Nine, said: “I felt proud to wear the uniform of the Trowbridge ATC and I felt special singing the national anthem.” l Pupils meet Bath Rugby stars: page 31
