WEST Wilts men received a wake-up call ahead of the start of their Davis Wood Hockey League Premier Two campaign as they were beaten 5-2 by Bournemouth.
The new-look squad were off the pace for most of the game against a well-drilled team, despite a fine performance from Hamish Wyper in goal. DJ Fricker and David King scored the goals.
There was better news for the men’s second string, who defeated Mid Somerset 5-0 in their friendly clash.
Good possession and movement enabled James Baker and Matt Dawson to get their names on the scoresheet before half-time.
Rich Hartley and Martin Allsop added another two goals in the second half and Baker executed a drag flick to the top left hand corner from a penalty corner for his second.
The third team also hit five as they took on Chippenham B in a friendly.
With Will Janes and Chris Westcott at the centre of most attacks, West Wilts were three up within 20 minutes as Westcott, Janes and Mike Roast, playing his first game in four years, netted.
Westcott added a fourth before half time and, despite two second-half strikes from Chippenham, Roast added a second.
WEST WILTS Ladies claimed a 3-2 win from their friendly with Salisbury 2nd.
Livvie Evans fired home from two penalty corner conversions before Salisbury replied in the opening half.
Aileen Watson made it 3-1 in the second period before Salisbury hit back again and Wilts needed Amy York’s intervention on the line to secure the win.
The ladies second team were narrowly defeated 3-2 by Salisbury 3rd. Sally Winter and Fiona Pridham were on target.
