When Bradford on Avon Town Council was elected in 2005, it was for a period of 4 years. The elections of 2009 did not take place because of the creation of Wiltshire Council when elections for that body took place. The next election for the Town Council will be in 2013.
The result as we now see is the town being served by an arrogant council who wish to ignore two polls that have not produced the answer they require, and who wish to put the matter of the cable stay bridge on hold. They are unwilling to consider any other bridge design, the last poll was our bridge or no bridge. This is the action of a council who think themselves unaccountable to the electorate and have forgotten their ‘raison d’etre’.
Is this council still a legitimate body? In a democracy, the electorate are entitled to remove those whom they elect on a regular basis by the holding of elections at regular intervals. This has not been possible in Bradford on Avon and the whole world can see the result.
