Westbury got a fresh taste of yesteryear with the opening of new heritage sweetshop Jitterbugs on Monday.

The store is run by Jon Cuthbert-Murray, who gave up his job as a regional manager for a cleaning company to open up the business on Maristow Street.

He said: “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do.

“I still remember all the sweet shops I visited when I was young and I want to recreate that atmosphere.”

Mr Cuthbert-Murray mov- ed to Westbury from Windsor 12 years ago and said he now loved his adopted home town.

He added: “Westbury has such a friendly bunch of people. They are so helpful and kind, plus I don’t think there is a kid in Westbury who doesn’t know about the shop.

“During the three months of developing the store, we’ve had a lot of interest from children walking past.”

The shop, which has been given a 1940s feel, stocks 375 different types of sweets, liquorice and fudge.

It also sells newspapers and sandwiches.

Confectionery will be measured out in pounds and ounces for adults, with gramme calculations for the younger generation.

Mr Cuthbert-Murray said: “I felt doing the measurements in pounds and ounces was a nice nostalgic touch and it reminded me of how sweet shops used to be.”

His new store, which is located in part of a former betting shop in Maristow Street, was officially opened by Cllr Jane Scott.

He said: “It was quite a coup to get Jane to come down for the official opening.

“She’s good friends with my partner, Mike, who’s a councillor, so that’s how it came about.

“I’m now, really looking forward to the future and developing my long-held ambition in Westbury.”

Cllr Scott said: “Again, this is another business opening in Westbury, which is great to see.

“I came to the opening of a charity shop on this street earlier in the summer and there’s a new cafe in the town, which I hear is doing well.

“It’s just another good thing for the town.

“A street that was once empty is becoming trendy with the addition of these specialist shops, which make Westbury such a nice place to visit.”
