Anna Littlechild is the principal manager of Alzheimer’s Support, a Wiltshire charity dedicated to enhancing the lives of dementia sufferers and their carers.
The charity turned 21 this year and Anna has been involved since day one, overseeing its growth from a desk in an office into an organisation with more than 60 staff and volunteers.
She said: “Before I got involved with Alzheimer’s Support I was working for social services in an old people’s home. I knew I wanted to so something else but I didn’t know what.”
After going on a training course about support for people with dementia, Anna applied for the role with Alzheimer’s Support.
She said: “I think my enthusiasm was what they wanted – I was really highly motivated. It’s just grown and grown. We’ve had amazing support from the community.
“I’ve loved it, I’ve never been bored and I’ve learned so much about all sorts of things which I never thought I’d get involved in.”
Anna lives in Chippenham with her husband of 36 years, David.
They have three adult children, two sons and one daughter, who all live in Wiltshire.
She added: “Once I moved here from Cambridge I’ve never wanted to move anywhere else.”
Why did you move to Wiltshire?
I moved from Cambridge 37 years ago and loved the contrast from the flat countryside of Cambridgeshire to the hills and trees of Wiltshire. When friends visit there are always so many places to show them and they enjoy the villages as much as I do.
Initially we were going to move to Bath but couldn’t find anything suitable. Something became available in Corsham and when we saw the view overlooking Colerne on the A4 coming to Corsham from Bath, we knew we had to live in Wiltshire.
What is the best Wiltshire view?
A few years ago a family carer I met through work showed me his favourite view in Iford, near Bradford on Avon, and since then it has become my favourite. As you walk down the hill from Westwood and see the bridge over the river and Iford Manor on your left, the view is breathtaking.
You are Queen of Wiltshire for a day. What is the first law you would change or introduce?
I can’t think of any laws that I would change, but if I had a magic wand or lots of money, I would give Wiltshire Council enough money to provide more specialist day clubs for people with dementia.
Where do you take visitors from outside the county?
Lacock, Biddestone, Castle Coombe, Westbury White Horse, Iford, Bradford on Avon, Shearwater, Stourhead, Longleat, I could go on and on!
What is your favourite pub or restaurant?
The Angel at Upton Scudamore.
What local sports teams do you support?
Sorry, I don’t!
What do you do for fun?
We love eating out and I enjoy attending music events at the Pound Arts Centre in Corsham and the Village Hall folk programme.
Describe your house and garden, what do you love about it?
We fell in love with our house when it was surrounded by fields. It is situated in the grounds of a country house that has been converted into apartments.
Although the area has been developed with additional housing, the lovely ambience has remained.
A couple of years ago we redesigned the garden and have a number of sitting and relaxing areas. We have a mature wisteria that grows up the front of the house. The front garden has a magnificent magnolia. Unfortunately it is preventing the grass from growing and we will need to do something about it next year.
