NORTH Wiltshire District Council has received a mixed report from the organisation that assesses the performance of local authorities.
In its annual audit and inspection letter, the Audit Commission was critical of some aspects of the council's performance and financial management, but praised it for a number of improvements.
According to Cllr Toby Sturgis, leader of the opposition Conservative group, the letter reports the district council to be among the worst performing councils for cleanliness of public land and overall satisfaction with the council.
But he said it accepts the council is in a healthy financial position and recognises that over half its main services have improved.
Council leader Carol O'Gorman said: "I am delighted with this year's annual audit and inspection letter as it recognises the significant steps we have taken to address the council's weaker service areas.
"I do however, recognise there is still work to be done but I'm confident our corporate plan will ensure we continue to improve our service delivery to benefit our local communities."
Cllr Sturgis believes the report highlights a need for massive improvement.
He said: "This confirms the Lib Dem run executive at the district council is failing to provide value for the taxpayers and I will continue to challenge this poor performance."
The council received the report last week and it went before the scrutiny committee yesterday.
It will be available to the public after it has gone to full council.
