VINTAGE vehicle enthusiast John Pomeroy, 60, has spent much of his life organising events and rallies around commercial vehicles. He lives in Warminster with his wife Sheila.
The couple have three grown-up daughters, Helen, Hazel and Sarah, two grandchildren and another on the way. Born in Salisbury Mr Pomeroy moved to Warminster in 1974 and spent most of his working life in the motor trade. He is now semi-retired, working part-time for Shopmobility in Warminster and delivery driving for a local firm...
What do you like most about living in Wiltshire?
Most of the time things in Wiltshire are pretty laid back. It is also central for everywhere. I travel a lot and you can get to Cornwall or the Midlands in a few hours and Scotland in about six hours.
Where would you recommend for a great evening out and why?
I like to visit travelling funfairs. I have a great interest in them. I always go to the annual fair in Salisbury each year. In 60 years I probably haven't missed more than 10. It is my interest in the machinery but also the people and the atmosphere.
Who would be your ideal dining partner and why?
I am a bit of a loner really. I prefer going to places on my own because there is no-one to move you on and I am not a fan of eating out. I would rather go out with friends than someone I didn't know.
Which local landmark or attraction would you recommend?
If you were talking about this part of Wiltshire you have to talk about Longleat and millions come to Wiltshire every year to see Stonehenge I think I have driven past it at every time of day and night and there is always someone looking over the fence. There is also Salisbury Cathedral. I am a bit of a traditionalist really.
What is your favourite book and why?
I like factual books. At the moment I am reading 1915: The Death of Innocence by Lyn Macdonald. It is based on the experience of people during the war and has been researched through letters of people who came back. It is quite fascinating.
Favourite music and why?
My favourite music is on a pretty broad spectrum, I like country and western and folk music, barbershop anything really but not too much of it.
If you were to start a new business in the county what would it be and why?
I really don't know. I suppose it would have to be something relevant to vintage vehicles but it is difficult starting up a business these days, that is the reason I gave it up.
If there is one thing missing from the county what is it?
I don't think anything is missing really. It is all out there if you look hard enough.
Which annual event is a must and why?
The Bournemouth to Bath run in September. It brings together 150 to 200 vintage and commercial vehicles. It started in 1971 and takes up quite a lot of my life.
