CORSHAM Centre will be bidding to become the first Chippenham Sunday League side to win the Wiltshire Sunday Cup for 12 years on Sunday.
The all-conquering Corsham Centre side face Swindon League side County Ground SFC in the final on Wootton Bassett's ground, kick-off 10.30am. Centre, who beat eight-time winners Greyhound in the semi-final, have been saying since the start of the season that their main aim this season is win the county's top honour for Sunday teams.
County Ground, who won the competition in 2004, will not be a pushover and Centre may think they did the hard work in the previous round and all they have to do is turn up to lift the cup. But Corsham Centre manager Pete Ralph is unlikely to let that happen as he bids to fulfill his ambition which could depend on the form of top scorer Simon Gray, who has failed to hit the mark since his two goals against the Greyhound.
But with Scott Lye, James Lye and Ben Moore among a number of fine players the Centre have a good chance of glory.
Sunday afternoon sees another cup final, with the presstoprint sponsored Eric Hughes Memorial Knockout Cup final at Chippenham Town's ground, kick-off 2.30pm. Premier Division Biddestone Social will start the game as odds-on favourites to beat Second Division Parsons Nose.
Biddestone boast the services of Calne Town's Steve Casey, Kevin and Gary Banks as well as a number of players from Biddestone's Saturday side. Parsons Nose have at their disposal Melksham Town goal keeper Gareth Evans and striker Steve Pegler as well as Chippenham Town manager Darren Perrin, who has won the cup seven times.
The final could be a first for the league as both teams will be fielding a set of twins. The Banks brothers line-up for Biddestone while the Robinson twins, Tom and Josh, take to the pitch for Parsons Nose. The Robinson boys have played a part in the underdogs' fine cup run that has already seen them eliminate four sides from the top flight and it was Josh's excellent strike that set them up for their 2-1 success over Corsham Cricketers in the semi-final.
It's hoped that the game can live up to the pre-match hype and that for the first time since 1998 Hardenhuish will be packed for a Chippenham League final.
PREMIER DIVISION
With the top two sides in cup action Westbury Rangers A will move into second spot if they can beat Winsley by two clear goals. Rangers have given up on top spot but know every game is important as they bid to take the runners-up spot. They are due to play Biddestone soon so need to get the points chalked up.
Hullavington travel to Box Rovers looking to claim a third successive victory in their attempt to avoid the drop. Box are unbeaten in five games and are showing signs of returning to the top of their game. Should Hullavington claim a win it would be one of the biggest upsets in the league in recent years.
Fellow strugglers Trowbridge Harriers are also on the road. They visit Dog and Fox Ashley and know they need a victory if they are to stay in the top flight for another season. With five games remaining Harriers have the games in hand to get out of jail, but it is hard to see where they are going to get a win from as the Dog are likely to end their own three match losing run.
DIVISION ONE
Champions Spencer Sports only need to avoid defeat against basement side The Horse and Groom to go through the whole season without losing a game. With the Horse and Groom desperate for a win to move them off the foot of the table and First Division safety they will be battling for every ball, but the only way you can picture a win for the Horse is if Spencer turn up with only seven players and have to play manager Tom Aust in goal.
With no win from 11 games, Atworth United are just out of danger and should be safe as both Chippenham Police and Horse and Groom below them can't buy a win at the moment. United welcome Holt and, with Tom Pang back to his best, could be facing a pounding. After a lean spell Pang has returned to form, with eight goals in three games and unless he forgets his boots for the clash with United he should add to that tally.
DIVISION TWO
Kings Arms (Trowbridge) should have few problems in beating rivals FC Bradford. A win for the Arms would see them take a massive step to claiming the title and a defeat for Bradford would leave them starring relegation in the face.
With Parsons Nose in cup action, both Kingfisher FC and Southwick Sports have the opportunity to close the gap on the second placed side. Kingfisher take on their bitter rivals Chippenham United RAOB, who, despite being rock bottom, stunned Kingfisher when the teams met a few weeks ago by overturning a 3-1 deficit at half-time to run out 5-3 winners.
United are desperate for a repeat of that scoreline but a more realistic one will be a victory to Kingfisher by at least four clear goals.
Southwick entertain Virgin Mobile and, having won the reverse clash 4-1, Southwick will be more than happy to repeat their win. Since since that defeat Virgin, despite being under investigation for playing an ineligible player in a recent game, have got things together and have won five out of six games to climb to fifth place in the table.
Steeple Ashton (Sunday) and Biddestone Arms are both playing for pride.
Neither team can go up or down so they will lock horns as they look for their best possible finish which for both teams will be midtable.
DIVISION THREE
Fascia Graphics' bid for the championship crown has been derailed in recent weeks. A run of no wins in four matches has left the race for the title wide open, with Rowde Dynamos and AFC Calne emerging as the teams who could steal the silverware.
Fascia visit Corsham Park Rangers and a month ago it would be a certain away win, but Rangers will fancy their chances of inflicting more pain on Fascia and should they win then it could be all change at the top come Sunday afternoon.
Rowde Dynamos are expected to beat Somerford to extend their winning run to nine matches, which in that time has seen them concede just three goals while scoring 46 which makes them the in-form team in the division.
AFC Calne have games in hand on the leading clubs but have not won any of their last three games and are in danger of fading away. Calne should beat local rivals North Star B with ease to get back on the glory trail, but should North Star upset the form book and pick up a win it would move them out of the bottom two if other results were to go their way.
Trowbridge Town Supporters' Club need to return from Chippenham with at least a point from Pack Horse Rangers. Rangers have not lost in four while the supporters have not won since early January and having lost 10 of their last 12 games it is hard to see where a win is going to come from.
They have three games left to play and the only thing saving them from the possibility of the drop is that they face fellow strugglers Somerford twice before the season ends and the outcome of those results could determine which of the two teams go down.
Wheatsheaf have shown no signs of the blues since they lost out in the WG Parr Trophy final. Their two games since then has seen them score 10 goals and they should get among the goals again against Blue Circle (Sunday).
DIVISION FOUR
Leaders The Plough are without a game which will give The Southgate Inn the opportunity to narrow the gap at the top to three points. They should add to their goal tally with a win over Wanderers, but the question is how many will Southgate score as they look to claw back the 25 goal advantage that Plough have over them. The Southgate won't score 25 goals but they could hit double figures.
Cooper-Avon are certain of a top three finish, but they will want to keep the pressure up on the Southgate as they wait to pounce on any slip up. Cooper-Avon need just two goals to reach the 100 mark in all competitions this season and they should do that away to The Crown FC.
Rising Sun return to action after a few weeks of rest but even with recharged batteries they are unlikely to get anything from their game with AFC Springfield, who have had a much better season than they did last term. Springfield could finish in the top six which is a great improvement on last year when they finished fourth from bottom.
