Parents in Rudloe have told of their disappointment after the headteacher and his deputy were suspended from Box Highlands Primary School.

Headteacher Mike Plummer and deputy head Sharon Purcell were suspended before the Easter holidays. A temporary headteacher and deputy are being drafted in until the matter is resolved.

It is not clear why the pair have been suspended or how long the suspension will last.

Becky Smith, 24, of Leylands Road is due to send her three-year-old daughter Mia to the school in September.

She said: "It's worrying because the school won't tell us anything so you naturally assume the worst.

"It's disgusting they won't tell the parents what's going on, many of my friends have children that already go there and they haven't heard a peep."

Grandmother Celia Hopkins of Springfield Close said: "I've not heard anything about it and neither has my daughter. I would consider it very surprising as the school has a very good reputation.

"The teachers are both very well thought of so it's very surprising and rather disappointing to hear this has happened."

Another mother, who did not wish to be named, said: "They're both excellent teachers and so well liked it seems wrong that this has all been hushed up. I think they're great teachers so I'm surprised that either of them have been suspended."

Chairman of the governors Valerie Richardson said: "The headteacher and the deputy headteacher have been suspended to allow a number of issues to be looked at by school governors and county council officials. It would be inappropriate to comment at this stage. However, suspension is always a neutral act and does not pre-suppose any wrongdoing."
