A WOMAN lorry driver was airlifted to hospital after her tanker overturned spilling 7,000 gallons of milk across junction 17 of the M4.

The accident happened at about 11.30am on Monday as the tanker approached a roundabout leaving the motorway at junction 17. The woman was airlifted to the Great Western Hospital, Swindon, but released from hospital after treatment later that day.

The A350 southbound from junction 17 was blocked off and traffic was diverted along the B1422 towards Sutton Benger as police tried to avoid gridlock.

An ambulance and four fire appliances from Chippenham, Corsham and Swindon were called to the scene at 11.34am.

Two appliances from Chippenham contained the spill while two pumping appliances cleaned up the milk, which had spread across all the road.

The Environment Agency also responded to the call and helped with the clean-up operation.

All lanes on the motorway were reopened later in the afternoon.
