VULNERABLE elderly and disabled patients will not suffer as a result of the £3m cutbacks made by the PCT last week, according to Wiltshire County Council.

Council bosses were left to reassess their budget just 14 hours before the new financial year was due to begin after receiving a letter from chief executive Carol Clarke. The funds were due to be spent on a variety of services including Elizabeth Lodge, in Trowbridge, and the home from home short break care team.

The money will now be taken from other services although council leader Jane Scott said it was too early to tell which services would be affected.

But she said the council was working quickly to assess the full impact of the cuts.

"The county council has a duty of care towards the most vulnerable members of our society. We will make sure we discharge that duty of care within a revised budget," she said.

The proposals will be put to the council cabinet next Friday and the full council on May 16.
