John Sharkey, pictured, has stood down as president of the Bournemouth Alliance after 25 years.

He first assumed the role in 1980 but, at the age of 67, feels it is time to take a break.

He has been presented with a cut glass decanter to mark his retirement.

"I have had wonderful times with the Alliance for many years," said the former European Tour professional who was a co-owner of Bulbury Woods when the course was first opened.

Broadstone professional Nigel Tokely was scheduled to take over but he has now stepped aside because of his impending move to new club Remedy Oak.

The committee has yet to make a decision about a new president.

The vice-president is Parkstone's elder statesman Mike Gibbs.
