Mention the name Eastwood at Yelverton and the name Laura immediately springs to mind. The 2005 English women's strokeplay champion is the most famous player at the club.
But now her father Karl has made a name for himself by winning the South West of England Open Winter Foursomes partnered by club colleague Gary Hawking.
And a pretty impressive win it was, too. They beat leading West Region professional Neil Holman and Richard Francis 5 and 4 in the 36-hole final.
Holman (Torbay Golf Centre), this year's new West Region PGA captain, and Francis, a junior at Holman's former club Churston, failed to appreciate the chilly conditions and were three down after nine and seven adrift at lunch. Both the weather and the Torquay pairing's play brightened in the afternoon. But their challenge was far too late.
Holman's consolation was winning the first professional's prize of £1,000 with Lester Barnes (Torquay) the runner-up. Holman was disadvantaged by a rib muscle injury, but made no excuses. Defending champions Barnes and Jonathan Ruth (Torquay) were beaten by one hole by the eventual winners in the semi final.
They also lost the third and fourth place play-off to 3 and 2 to China Fleet pair Des Carty and Ian Verner who gave Holman and Francis a real battle before losing the semi-final on the 18th green.
The competition over seven rounds started in October with 83 teams from Devon and Cornwall but was disrupted by the weather twice, first through rain and then frost.
