Daryl Kelley, pictured, has won his first golf tournament since taking over as Filton club professional a year ago.

He claimed first place in the Gloucester and Somerset PGA medal at Henbury and is now intent on making a mark on this year's West Region PGA circuit.

Yet there was a time when the 29-year-old Yorkshireman's playing career was in jeopardy. During his amateur days, he wrecked his kneecap while trying an impossible three-wood shot from the back of a bunker at Harrogate club Pannal in a Yorkshire county amateur event.

"I was out for eight months and that proved to be a full season," he said. "But that is behind me now and, after establishing myself at Filton, I want to play more and shoot some low numbers."

Kelley, who is from Scarborough, and played off a remarkable handicap of plus-four as an amateur, thought he had blown his chances of victory at Henbury when he dropped three shots on the final two holes.

But his level par 69 was quite sufficient for a three-stroke win over promising Gloucestershire county amateur Joe Campbell from Cotswold Hills, the steady George Ryall (Clevedon Golf Centre) and Guiseppe Licata (The Bristol).
