A VILLAGE church is getting royal backing in an attempt to raise £50,000 to pay for repairs to its roof.
On Tuesday morning, the Archdeacon of Malmesbury, the Ven Alan Hawker, launched the Pennies to stop the Heavens appeal, at St Cyriac's, Lacock.
The Duchess of Cornwall, who has a home in the village, has agreed to be the appeal patron.
The nave roof of the Grade 1 listed medieval church is in urgent need of repair, and although English Heritage is offering a grant, more money is needed.
Around £50,000 has to be raised to make up the shortfall in funding.
The Pennies to stop the Heavens appeal will raise money within Lacock, from visitors to the church and from businesses.
A number of special events are planned over the next year to help the appeal.
All villagers will receive a collection box in which to save their pennies, while the names of those donating £10 or more will be recorded in a book to be kept in the church.
