AS A town councillor, I was in attendance at the Town Council meeting on March 21, where Dr Rowlands and Dr Stephen Locke both gave a presentation of their joint plans to promote the future of healthcare in the town.
Whilst I commend and support their ideals in this project, I have great concerns, as I stated in the meeting, about the proposed location, which would mean expansion of the existing Adcroft Surgery onto land at the back of the surgery, known as Hospital Fields.
This piece of land has been used for recreation for well over 60 years and is currently used by both footballers and Trowbridge Cricket Club.
Twelve youth football teams that play in the Mid Wilts Youth Football League use this venue, comprising of three under-7s teams, four under 8s, three under 9s and two under 11s. They play over 135 games during the season and enjoy the use of proper changing facilities, ample parking and secure surroundings as offered by the Cricket Club.
A great deal of time and energy has been spent in recent years in the development of this facility, which in turn helps to sustain the future and viability of the Cricket Club by all year round use. Surely the promotion of physical activity, especially amongst the youth in our community, is of equal importance and should therefore be considered as being part of primary healthcare.
Is this really the best site for this proposed development? Can we afford to lose any more valuable recreation land at the expense of such a development?
J Knight, Trowbridge
